Jean Tinguely is well-known for his machines, which rotate, chime and rattle in absurd motions; but Eva Aeppli is connected with immobile, dignified, even sad figures which appear dumbly to look straight through you. Often, they are eyeless, full of pain and sorrow. »I want them to fly« says Eva Aeppli and her friend Jean Tinguely has made sure it happens. Although they weren’t made light and weightless – that could not be expected of Tinguely’s work – but they dangle and shake and come alive. And so a number of collaborations came about, of which one was given to Daniel Spoerri.

The expression on the faces of the »Erinyes« or »Furies« has a particularly offensive effect. The goddesses of vengeance turn angrily against the viewer. They represent the negative aspects of the so-called »invisible planets« Neptune, Pluto and Uranus. The branches of the old and very withered olive tree behind them reach out, like an extension of the furrows in their faces, towards the sky.

This figural group is very popular in the Giardino. Visitors look for »their« star sign and compare the physiognomy with the characteristics attested to by their sign. The sculptures let that wash over them with equanimity and continue to cast their gaze steadfastly towards the horizon while we closely study their nuanced facial characteristics. The location of the group was almost coincidental, like a photo should be made. The steps permit the figures to be arranged so that none obscures another. Daniel Spoerri had them positioned there immediately.
