Born in Volterra in 1937, he started his career as an artist by concentrating on painting. An other important focus of his work has been his teaching activities. Staccioli has been exploring the field of sculpture since the early 1960ies. With his later works he has increasingly capitalized on interventions in public space. Examples for this can be found all over the world (Italy, Taiwan, United States etc.). Staccioli died in 2018.

Viewed as a fragment of an archway, Mauro Staccioli’s intervention in the »Giardino« establishes a link to the motto of the park »Hic Terminus Haeret«, to »Terminus«, the god of boundaries and transition. Formally, the large steel construction, which reminds Daniel Spoerri of an »apple wedge«, appears, despite its tension-filled torsion, as a sunken trunk or pillar that carefully – even gently, as if to rest for a moment – leans on a neighbouring tree.
