The attempt to glue her figures rather than sew them failed. Two of five such heads didn’t go in the bin, however. They were employed as scarecrows by the couple who supervised Eva Aeppli’s household and vegetable garden at the time. Daniel Spoerri remembers that they served as airgun target practice. Eva Aeppli presented another of these unsuccessful heads as a gift to Daniel Spoerri, who used it in a montage together with an old chopping board. When, some time later, Eva Aeppli saw the head again, she liked its collapsed and shrivelled condition and took it to a bronze caster. Embedded between two mighty branches of an olive tree, it seems to watch the visitors walking past. Yet its empty eye sockets see into otherworldly depths.
