»Everything is possible with iron,« says Kimitake Sato. »It’s so fast. It reacts immediately.« If you make a mistake when cutting into wood, the mistake is irreparable, but iron can always be reheated and the error corrected. In Kimitake’s eyes, iron even compares favourably with clay. Clay will change its form as long as it is moist, but by contrast, iron is more reliable. For »The Mask«, first a paper model entitled »The Face of Kimitake« was produced. Then he built a large model in cardboard, from which he was able to take the measurements for the iron sculpture. The work’s subtitle »Zura« means »grimace« or »ugly face«.
