Born in 1959 in the south of Germany.
He studied at the Academy of Arts in Munich. Since 1997 he works on stones. Pleier erected various sculptures in public spaces among which there are other basalt columns, which resemble the one that has been installed at the »Giardino«in July 2003. Josef Pleier visited the »Giardino« several times in the run of one year and he made measurements and calculations regarding different positions of the sun to be able to make exact holes into his basalt column through which we can see the sun at certain moments of the year, resp. of the day.
