Born 1951 at Bernried near the Lake Starnberg. He lives in Nuremberg, mainly working as a sculptor. His so-called »Blockdiagrame« (block-diagrams), two of which are in the »Giardino«, belong to a series called »The Gordian Knot«. Originally they had been installed in front of the Bundeshaus in Bern.

Till Augustin
The Gordian Knot
1998-2001
each knot 75 x 75 x 75 cm
steel rope, plinth in corten steel
The block diagrams, of which two can be viewed in the Giardino, were originally part of a series entitled »The Gordian Knot«. They originally stood in front of the Federal Palace in Bern. Till Augustin’s works are characterised by tensions. Whether huge, ruptured beams, whose splintering broken surfaces are directed towards each other, or dangerously sharp, spindle-shaped sculptures, the artist always makes those forces visible that are innate to the sculpture’s material. The block diagrams were first pressed together under huge pressure and then cut so that the inside of the twisted rope was visible. Turned and twisted, the viewer imagines that the elements could spring apart once again.
