As in the depictions>" Malattie della
pelle" or the> «Lépreux
d’Islande» the illustrated surgical procedures («Médicine
opératoire»), “drawn according to the style of N.H.
Jacob” around 1800 are of great perfection and beauty. The object
of depiction is of course horrifying. The operating hands seem angel-like.
The procedure is shown without blood, similar to the sterile and stylized
illustrations in emergency instructions on airplanes which stand out because
of the omission of the catastrophe.
Both larger works on engravings, which are taken from Diderot’s
and D’Alembert’s «Encyclopaedie» and smaller-sized,
often almost square pictures with illustrations of surgical procedures
are part of the series «Cabinet Anatomique».
