IIn Daniel Spoerri’s endless collection of objects was the shirt of a Central African Ashanti chief. It was richly outfitted with little leather packets, strength-giving amulets. Spoerri used these for a series of square, small-sized collages, which he calls “batakari”, in accordance with the African term for these “shirts of war”.
